New York City, the city that never sleeps, had been on my travel bucket list for as long as I could remember. The anticipation was palpable as I boarded my flight, but little did I know that my journey would take an unexpected turn right from the start. Let me tell you how it stole my heart with my New York City sightseeing review.
Unexpected Adventures in Brooklyn
My excitement turned to frustration when my flight got delayed, and I found myself arriving in the Big Apple well past midnight.
To add to my rocky start, I had mistakenly booked my hostel for the following day. However, fortune favors the brave, and I managed to secure a last-minute hostel in Brooklyn for the night.

Brooklyn Blues
My first impression of Brooklyn was less than stellar. It felt a bit gritty and, dare I say it, not as safe as I’d expected. But I realized that this might have been influenced by my short time in the city. After all, comparing it to the safety of European cities is like comparing apples to oranges.
Navigating the City
The next morning, I decided to put my initial concerns aside and explore New York City proper. I grabbed an uber into Manhattan, the city’s energy was contagious.
Sure, there was trash on the ground and graffiti on some walls, but the sheer number of people bustling about made me feel safer instantly.
From Chinatown’s bustling streets with street vendors hawking counterfeit luxury goods to the vibrant atmosphere of Chelsea with its restaurants, shops, and parks, New York City was quickly living up to its reputation.
Getting Around the City
One thing that struck me was how easy it was to get around NYC. Street names were prominently displayed on every corner, making navigation a breeze. I found my way to iconic spots like Times Square, Rockefeller Center, and Central Park Zoo without a hitch.
Culture and Exploration
I delved into the city’s cultural scene, visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Natural History. Both were awe-inspiring and well worth the visit, despite the lines. And of course, I couldn’t resist trying a classic Nathan’s hot dog, although it didn’t quite live up to the hype.
Exploring the culture of this bustling city is why New York City stole my heart.
Subway Adventures
To truly experience the city like a local, I decided to give the subway a try. I purchased a $9 MetroCard, paid $1 to load it, and found the subway system surprisingly easy to use. Armed with a list of stops, it was a breeze to know where I was headed.
Exploring Manhattan
I couldn’t visit New York without paying my respects at the 9/11 Memorial site. The experience was somber and reflective.
Afterward, I explored the eclectic Greenwich Village, a place that felt like both a big city and a small town rolled into one.
Delights of Greenwich Village
Greenwich Village had its quirks, including a significant homeless population, but it added to the neighborhood’s unique character. I treated myself to some delicious treats at the iconic Bleecker Street Magnolia Bakery before heading back to my hostel.
Conclusion
Stepping into the heart of New York City, with its towering skyscrapers and bustling streets, was an exhilarating experience in itself, New York City stole my heart right from the beginning.
However, the highlight of my trip was undoubtedly my first visit to the Gershwin Theatre to watch “Wicked.” As the curtains rose and the lights dimmed, I was transported to the enchanting world of Oz, where Elphaba and Glinda’s extraordinary journey unfolded before my eyes.
The incredible performances, dazzling costumes, and the powerful music left me spellbound, and I couldn’t help but be swept away by the magic of the city and the theater.
It was a night I’ll cherish forever, a perfect fusion of the vibrant energy of New York and the captivating storytelling of “Wicked.”
My first days in New York City were a whirlwind of experiences, from the unexpected detour to Brooklyn to the ease of navigating the subway like a pro.
Despite a few hiccups, the city’s vibrant energy, rich culture, and endless opportunities for exploration had me eagerly anticipating the next leg of my adventure in the city that truly never sleeps.
