In this blog post, I want to share my review of my Mediterranean Cruise aboard the Norwegian Gem. Give you impressions and insights, highlighting the things I loved, and things I didn’t.
The unique experiences that made this Mediterranean Journey Aboard the Norwegian Gem so special.
Embarking on a cruise for the first time is an exciting adventure, filled with the promise of new experiences and unforgettable memories.
My voyage with the Norwegian Cruise Line, aka NCL in the Mediterranean was a whirlwind of sights, tastes, and sensations that I’ll cherish forever.
First Impressions of my Norwegian Mediterranean Cruise
NCL knows how to make a guest feel welcome. One of the subtle yet charming touches I appreciated was the silverware and condiments readily available on the tables.
that made it easier since I was traveling solo, if I had forgotten my silverware and had to go up to the front, there was a chance my plate could get taken away. I’ve had that happen on other cruises I’ve been on.
It’s these small details that set the stage for a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience.
With other cruises I have been on solo, I would have to bring my silverware and napkins and everything I needed. Sometimes if I got up just for a moment to get something I would come back and my plate would be gone because I didn’t have anybody to watch it.
This is such a small and insignificant thing to some people, but it made me feel better traveling solo knowing I didn’t have to worry about eating at the buffet by myself.
Food Aboard the Norwegian Gem
If there’s one thing I’ll always remember about NCL, it’s the incredible food. The buffet, in particular, was better than the other cruises I’vebeen on.
They had lot of different types of cuisine in the shop like asian, indian, italian, making every meal a new and delightful experience.
Whether you’re a foodie or just love good eats, NCL’s buffet is a must-try.
For the pizza aficionados out there, NCL’s buffet offers some of the best slices you’ll find at sea. Don’t miss out on this savory treat.
I spent many nights enjoying a piece of pizza and a chocolate chip cookie from the buffet. The desserts were delicious as well. Each night they had new ones to try.
The Wi-Fi Dilemma
While the cruise was filled with memorable moments, the need to log in to Wi-Fi every time I connected was a minor inconvenience.
It’s a small hiccup in an otherwise smooth experience, but worth noting for those who rely heavily on staying connected.
Excursions Made Easy
One of the standout features of NCL’s cruise experience is how they handle ship excursions.
We all met in the theatre and waited for our excursion to be called. It made it a lot easier and less stressful to know where we needed to be.
We met outside at a designated area and they gave us headsets to use during tours so we always knew what was going on.
It made exploring each port of call effortless and easy to follow.
Smooth Sailing on Board my Nowegian Mediterranean Cruise
Navigating the ship was a breeze. The elevators were rarely crowded. There seemed to be a lot of younger people on the ship, so that freed up the elevators a lot.
I wanted to get more exercise, so I tried to use the stairs as much as I could.
Free at Sea Perks on Norwegian Gem
NCL’s “Free at Sea” perks, including Wi-Fi and excursion discounts, sweetened the deal.
However, it’s essential to be aware of the limitations, such as limited Wi-Fi minutes and additional costs for certain drinks and items.
you had to know what was included and what wasn’t so you didn’t get unexpectedly charged.
A Stable Sea Experience
I was pleasantly surprised by how stable the ship felt. Even in my cabin, I could barely detect any movement, making for a restful night’s sleep.
I had been on a smaller ship in the past where you could feel the rocking of the boat. One day the water was choppy and a lot of people on board started feeling sick, including me.
im glad I didn’t have that experience on this ship. I did bring my dramamine just in case.
Exploring the Mediterranean Gems
The ports of call on this Mediterranean cruise were a diverse mix of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Beautiful Corfu
Corfu, with its shuttle bus service, was a standout, allowing easy exploration of a picturesque town.
It was easy to walk around and grab a pastry or an ice cream to enjoy while wandering around.
Santorini
Santorini left a significant impression on me. The mountain walls that surround the island when you arrive are majestic.
However, the downside was the long line for the cable car up and back down, which is something to keep in mind.
this was the most crowded port we went to. There was a long line to get back to the ship and it was a small area with shops and restaurants.
if you don’t like large crowds in small places, you might want to try another island.
Mykonos
Mykonos offers a vibrant experience with stunning scenery and easy access to the island’s famous beaches and historic sites.
Expect crowds, especially during peak season, but the bustling atmosphere adds to the charm. Whether you dock at the modern new port or the picturesque old port, you’ll find plenty of transportation options to explore this iconic Greek island.
we docked at the old port and it was easier to get around than santorini.
Charming Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, with its picturesque squares and Game of Thrones filming locations, was a favorite. And the local gelato is not to be missed.
Hvar’s Unique Charm
Hvar was a pleasant surprise. The city is entirely walkable, and there are plenty of options for renting boats or joining guided tours. The local pastries and gelato are delightful, and the bustling harbor adds to the charm.
Kotor’s Beauty and Serenity
Kotor’s stunning landscapes and charming town were a highlight. A boat trip to Perast to visit the Lady of the Rock is a must.
exploring Kotor’s squares, shops, and cafes was a delight. Kotor definitely made my mediterranean journey aboard the Norwegian Gem truly spectacular.
Trieste: A European Gem
Trieste, with its European architecture and vibrant cafe culture, felt like a hidden gem. It’s a walkable city with a lot to offer, and it felt incredibly safe to explore.
I had never thought about coming here, but I loved it so much. I enjoyed a delicious Cappuccino and a chocolate croissant from a local Cafe.
After exploring the city I also enjoyed a Pistachio Gelato, which was so delicious, but of course it would be because it’s Italy.
Safe Ports and High Wi-Fi Costs
Throughout the journey, I felt completely safe in all the ports we visited. However, it’s worth noting that NCL’s Wi-Fi plans can be quite expensive, so plan accordingly.
Seamless Departure and Arrival
The transition from the ship to the airport was smooth. Waiting to be called by tag color made it easy, and bringing my own luggage off the ship simplified the process.
The bus ride I booked through the ship from Trieste port to Venice airport took about two hours. It was wonderful seeing the views along the way.
An Unusual Perk
NCL doesn’t check for drinks when boarding, allowing you to bring water and snacks with you, a difference from other cruise lines.
it was hot the day I went so I was glad I could bring my water aboard.
another perk was that they had water dispensers when you walked in to the checkpoint. It was a nice touch on a hot day.
Conclusion
My first experience with the Norwegian Cruise Line in the Mediterranean was an adventure filled with incredible moments and unique discoveries.
From the culinary delights to the ease of exploring picturesque ports, NCL left a lasting impression.
While minor inconveniences like Wi-Fi connectivity and the need to upgrade for certain amenities exist, the overall Mediterranean Cruise aboard the Norwegian Gem was an amazing experience.
If you’re considering a cruise in the Mediterranean, NCL offers an experience that combines relaxation, exploration, and culinary delights, all while feeling safe and well taken care of.
I hope this review of my Mediterranean Cruise aboard the Norwegian Gem has helped you pick your next cruise. I will definitely be cruising with Norwegian again.
